Dostana Woolton

Last week we paid a visit to Woolton - it isn't one of our usual haunts but it is packed full of small bars, restaurants and boutique shops. As we strolled past the pensioners walking into the grand town hall ready to play their weekly bingo, we arrived at Dostana.
Outside the black and white fronted building was a wooden canopy adorned with fairy lights which I imagine would be lovely to sit under to enjoy a glass of sauvignon, or two, in warmer weather.

Dostana literally means 'friendship' and that perfectly sums up the atmosphere that you will find here. We went in to be greeted by huge smiles from all of the staff. It was a genuinely friendly welcome for us and all the other customers that followed. It is clear, as soon as as you walk in, that Dostana is a family run business - it has a homely feel and all the customers were treated like old friends.    The decor, much like the menu is a perfect pairing of new and old.

We had taken our little boy in his pram and all the staff were incredibly hospitable, making sure we could fit the buggy next to our table and asking if there was anything we needed for him.  We also noticed that Dostana have signed up for the Bambis charter meaning that they are 'Breastfeeding Friendly'...great news for breastfeeding mums and further confirmation that Dostana is very much has family at it's heart.

We were shown the menu and the veggie/vegan options on offer. Dostana have recently launched a new menu which has introduced Indian street food options alongside a more familiar Indian menu with everyone's favourites on which meant that there was more than enough to chose from.

We decided to try all 5 of the veggie options on the new street food menu...and we were not disappointed. Before our food arrived, poppadoms came with a fresh and tasty selection of dips to enjoy whilst we waited for the main event.  You cant really go wrong with a poppadum but the great variety of sweet, spicy and tasty sauces that accompanied them were worth the visit alone and they disappeared pretty quickly.

Our food arrived and it looked great.
First up was the Vada Pau (a fried potato patty on a burger bun) whilst I've tried this a couple of times in other places so was eager to see Dostana's take on it.  The other half thinks carbs on carb is an outrage but I'm definitely all about that carb life.  It was exactly how you would imagine, crispy carb on carb heaven.

Next up was the Chilli Paneer and Chilli Potato, with the latter kicking quite a punch, I'd recommend having a drink on hand, but to be fair, we were warned, not just by the staff, but also by the name of the dish.  The friendly staff also recommended the Malabari Paratha bread to accompany our mains...best recommendation ever!  I want to go back already just for that bread again, it was amazing!

After that, we had the Samosa Chatt. Now imagine a samosa, that sounds great I hear you say. Now imagine a samosa with toppings. I know! Pretty special eh. The fillings were delicious and the toppings of salad and some sort of cream/yoghurt made it even better.

We finished by sharing a Chilli Cheese Toast, two slices of perfectly toasted white bloomer with melted cheddar, red onion, peppers, coriander and a couple of chillis thrown on for good luck. Basically cheese on toast for the Gods.

Before we left, we noticed Dostana's new weekend breakfast menu. Breakfast? In an Indian restaurant? It's definitely different but by the looks of the menu, it's going to be worth the visit and could be a real breakfast game changer. There were plenty of veggie and vegan options on the menu but it's also made clear that you can chop and change whatever takes your fancy.  The breakfast will also be with unlimited tea and coffee so you can start your day with a much needed caffeine hit!

With great food and great service, we'll defo be paying them another visit in a few weeks for breakfast not least because I need their homemade smokey squash and sweet potato sausages in my life as soon as possible! 🀀.
